REVIEW: Wolf's Law by The Joy Formiable

So today was a big release day with many albums out, but I can only review so many, so I’ve decided to review Wolf’s Law by The Joy Formidable today, True North by Bad Religion hopefully later this week, and  Rebirth by Trapt if possible. These are two great albums by to great bands. Let’s dive right in!

1. This Ladder Is Ours
This song was a single off the album, so it’s been out in the wild for a while now. From the first time I heard it, I loved it. The song is super catchy and just a blast to listen to. Everything flows amazingly. The chorus is just so great. This was a great single and a great way to start off the album.

2. Cholla
After hearing the bombastic opening, you know this is going to be a great song. Well, it goes a bit downhill after the beginning, but is still a good song. I don’t feel like this song is impassioned as some of their other stuff, but it’s still good. The great riff saves this song from mediocrity.

3. Tendons
Another great intro riff, another Joy Formidable song. This song is somewhere between the last two songs in terms of emotion, and is another very good song, but lacks a little something.  Great bridge though.

4. Little Blimp
If you can’t tell already, I’m a sucker for good riffs and this song impresses me again in those terms.  But even better than the pass couple of songs, this one is full of energy.  The vocal effects used in this song keep things interesting and it really makes a great song.

5. Bats
WHERE IS MY AWESOME OPENING RIFF? Oh waits, it’s been replace with a great opening vocal, I guess that’s ok. And boy, this song is fantastic. I feel like this has the most emotion on the album so far, shown especially in the epic chorus.  The intensity of the song is super high, which just makes you want to get up and do something. This is the best song on the album so far.

6. Silent Treatment
After the intensity of the previous song, we go to a much lower key song. While it’s not very original, you can hear the emotion behind the great vocals. This is a great way to take a break from the rest of the album, right in the middle no less.

7. Maw Maw Song
First, let me get out of the way that this song is quite weird, but weird is often awesome, and in this case it is. While the vocals aren’t the best on the album, they feel emotional as always and the instrumentals sound pretty good. This is definitely the strangest song on the album, but it works. Right after the break is a perfect time for this song. Also, the chorus is extremely catching.

8. Forest Serenade
This song goes back to the less emotional songs, back on the record. While it’s not bad, it just kind of feels like filler. All I can say is “meh.”

9. The Leopard and the Lung
This song has great instrumentals, but I feel like it’s lacking in other areas. It might be that they’re trying to make a different sounding track, but it doesn’t really work. Another “meh.”, but a good “meh.”

10. The Hurdle
Another good slow song, but again feels like it lacks emotion. It's a good song, but not up to the very high bar of some of the other songs on the record.

11. The Turnaround
Clocking in around nine minutes, this is by far the longest song on the record. I usually dislike long songs, as they get boring after awhile, but this one stays great throughout. A ballad of sorts, but still feels right on this album. A great way to end this fantastic record.

To put it plainly, this is a damn good album. I had a blast listening to it and it has a ton of heart. It sometimes losses its greatness, but mostly it stays awesome. Even when it got a bit worse, it was still very good. It was a day one purchase for me, which is actually quite rare. I'm going to give 8/10 stars for being mostly amazing. It might only be January, but this has " One Of The Top 10 Albums Of The Year" written all over it.

So what did you guys think of the album? Or are you just mad I didn't review True North or Rebirth  today? Tell me in the comments below? Until then, have a good life and goodbye. Eon out, peace!
