INTERVIEW: I Fight Dragons

I can't believe I just interviewed I Fight Dragons (specifically Brian Mazzaferri), but I did. Here's the interview!

1. To introduce you guys to people who haven't heard of you before, where are you from, who are you guys, what is your style of music?

I Fight Dragons, from Chicago, we're rad dudes, and we play chiptune rock

2. How did you guys meet and how was the band formed? Also, how did you get your band's name?

The band name actually came before the band formation.  Our logo appeared to me in a flash, and I knew that I needed to start a band based around that name and logo.  So I called people up to join my new Nintendo Rock band and to their credit they (mostly) said yes

3. Who are your idols and inspirations for the music you play?

Fountains of Wayne has been my favorite band for a LONG time, and we all love Weezer.  Packy and Chad are more into classic rock and Wilco, Hari is more into Metal, and Bill loves classic dance/pop like Michael Jackson

.
4. You are on a headlining tour (which hopefully I will be able to make) right now and you were on Warped Tour this summer. What are both of those like?

VERY different.  Warped is like Punk Rock Summer Camp, sweaty and grueling and amazing.  This is us putting on our show with lights and TVs and magic in small rock clubs.  Much more relaxing but also awesome :)

5. You have a very unique sound. How did you decide on doing it and how does it change how you perform and produce your music?

I felt like a kid in a candy store when I first discovered chiptune in 2008.  I knew immediately I needed to build a band around combining it with pop rock.  The band actually came together around the sound, which is atypical I feel like for most bands.

6. What is your favorite part of being in a band?

For me, it's songwriting. That's my dream and my favorite activity in the world.

7. You recently broke with your record label, Atlantic Records. What's life like without a record label?

So far so good!  We had gone about as far as we could with them, so it made sense for us to part ways.  We got a lot out of our time with them, and now we're seeing how we can make the most of our time now that we have a lot of our freedom back.

8. What is your favorite story about your experiences as a band?

There are so many tour stories I can't even think where to begin.  There was this one time where we rocked so hard it created a wormhole onstage but due to the distortion of the time-space continuum that it caused and the subsequent self-devouring nature of the wormhole that might not have technically "happened"

9. That all I can think of to ask. Anything else you want to share as a closing statement or something along the lines of " fun facts" or trivia?

REVIEW: Gossamer by Passion Pit

Today I'm going to do a track-by-track review of Gossamer by Passion Pit. Here it goes:

Since this was the single for the album, you've probably already heard it, but it still is a very strong song. I would say it's one of the best songs on the album and has a lot of energy behind it. It's also one of the songs, that brakes through some of the monotony of the album, but more on that later...

Another very strong song, with a lot of energy. This song is just a lot of fun. This song has some of the strongest effects of any song on the album, especially the incredible intro...

This song is the beginning of the monotony of the album, but hasn't completely fallen for it yet. Another fun and energetic song, but not as strong as the first two track. There are moments where this songs shines such as the bridge, but during the verse and sometimes the chorus a lot of the energy goes away...

This is where the monotony shows its horrible face. This song is just plainly boring. I don't mind slowing down the pace, even for an energetic band like Passion Pit, but this doesn't work. I feel sleepy(head) just listening to it...

This song picks the pace up a bit, but still doesn't bring back up to the opening tracks. I really like the synth part, but otherwise the song is a bit weak. Not bad, but not great...

This song has a bit more energy than the last song, but still hasn't gotten the energy level back to where I want it to be. Again not bad, but still not reaching greatness...

This is the song I've been waiting for. Yes, it's still not as good as the first two tracka, but at least the energy is at an acceptable level. It's now fun again to listen to this music. The intro is awesome, but it could be a bit shorter. Hopefully, the rest of the album will pick up again...

My prayers have been fulfilled, the next song is fun, energetic, and plainly just really good. It could have a bit more to it, but at this point this is good enough...

This song put the energy level from the last song to shame. This is much more like the intro tracks, but they still haven't reached the awesomeness of those two songs. It's a good combination of the slow tracks and the energetic tracks...

As I look back the album, I realize that there is a flow to this album (a lot of the energy and then it gets slower, but picking up speed as it gets towards the end), so you expect this song to have a lot of energy, right? Well, you'd be right and wrong at the same time. This song has some very energetic parts, but then you get to the verse and it's super slow. I like the track and it works well as an ending to the album because the ending to the song is energetic, but I wish it could have been a bit more energetic...

Well there you have it. It might have sounded like I didn't like the album, but that isn't the case.  I like a lot of the songs, but it needs to have more variety to hold up as an album. I consider myself a relatively big Passion Pit fan and was extremely disappointed when they recently cancelled my local show, but I don't think this is they're best album. Manners just has a lot more energy and variety then this album. I'm sad to say that I'm going to give the album a 6/10 stars, not because the songs are bad, but just because it just doesn't hold up as an album for the above reason. I would still recommend you to listen to the album, even if it a bit boring.

So what do you guys think of the album? Tell me in the comments below. Thanks for reading! Please share this post/blog if you liked it, maybe even subscribe!

EDIT (9/19/12): I know this is very late, but I would like to make a few comments about this review. First off, the public now knows the reason of why Passion Pit had to cancel their tour days, and that is because the lead singer, Michael Angelakos, is bipolar and was having problems with it when they were supposed to tour. Second, I read an interview with Michael and he said that this album was going in a different direction from their old albums, which I didn't exactly grasp at the time. While I won't change my review, I now understand the album a lot more and think higher of it than I did at the time of my review.
